Subfloor Preparation & Levelling

Levelling, smoothing, plywood overlays and damp-proof membranes. The foundation of every great floor.

Every great floor starts with what is underneath it. Most flooring failures, such as lifting, bubbling, gapping, creaking and bumps showing through, can be traced back to a poorly prepared subfloor. Correct preparation is not an optional extra. It is the foundation of a floor that looks perfect and lasts.

Assessment and moisture testing

Before any work begins we assess the existing subfloor: is it concrete, screed or timber? Is it sound, flat and dry? On concrete and screed floors we test for residual moisture, because laying flooring over a floor that is too damp can cause adhesive failure and lifting. Where moisture levels are too high, we apply a suitable surface damp-proof membrane before smoothing.

Smoothing and levelling compounds

Smoothing compounds create a perfectly flat, smooth and absorbent surface for flooring to be bonded to. We prime the subfloor, then apply the compound to the correct depth to remove dips, ridges and imperfections. Where floors are significantly out of level, deeper levelling compounds or fibre-reinforced products may be needed.

Plywood overlays on timber floors

Floorboards move, and their joints, nail heads and gaps will show through thin floor coverings such as LVT and vinyl. Overlaying with plywood, fixed at close centres, creates a stable, smooth base and stops movement telegraphing through to the new floor.

Uplift and removal

We can uplift and dispose of old carpet, vinyl, tiles and laminate, and remove old adhesive residues, so the subfloor is ready for preparation. Just let us know when we visit and we will include it in your quote.

Questions

Subfloor Preparation: FAQs

Why do I need a smoothing compound?

LVT, vinyl and safety flooring are thin and will show any imperfections in the floor below. A smoothing compound creates a perfectly flat, smooth surface so your new floor looks flawless and the adhesive bonds properly.

Can you lay flooring on a new screed straight away?

Usually not. New screeds need time to dry, and we will test the moisture level before fitting. Where the screed is still too damp, a suitable damp-proof membrane can often allow work to go ahead sooner.
